SM Research Agent (SMDI)
The SM Research Agent (Small Molecule) interprets and translates your plain‑English questions into queries against our SMDI database and presents the results back to you in a digestible format. It is also connected to PubChem, which gives the agent context on publicly available aliases (e.g. aspirin).
Prefer to learn by listening? A NotebookLM version of this guide covering all of the information on this site is available — ask in the SM Research Agent Slack help channel for the link.
Always use a critical eye to determine whether the results you get are accurate. The agent is building SQL queries against SMDI to answer your question, so be patient and verify key answers.

Evaluating the agent’s accuracy
- Review the source of the data and the filters used in the agent’s response.
- Ask smaller questions that build on one another instead of one large question.
- Validate key answers along the way using existing sources of truth or a trusted colleague.
- Consider when accuracy is critical vs. a nice‑to‑have for your investigation.
What to expect
| Question type | Typical response time |
|---|---|
| Simple questions | 30 sec – 1 minute |
| Complex questions | 2 – 5 minutes |
If a response takes longer than that, it is worth retrying / rephrasing your query, or raising it in the Slack help channel.
